Balmain Fall 2017

Balmain, led by social media wunderkind Olivier Rousteing, just showed their latest menswear collection. The theme seemed to be heavily influenced by music as evidenced by the brands Instagram posts. I feel there's a disconnect though. The clothing is so ornate and over the top (as Balmain normally is) that is seems fit for more of a manufactured pop star rather than a heavy metal rock God. It lacks the ease and simplicity that can be found in Saint Laurent, a brand favored by many rock stars and with a cult following. I'm sure the price point will be outrageous, the details and beading are absolutely magnificent and are on par with couture level craftsmanship. My question is who is the Balmain customer? While the brand has amassed quite the social media following can their followers afford any of it? With no fragrance and scant accessories available for purchase Balmain isn't able to channel the press from its runway shows into sales of entry level product. See some of my favorite pieces from the collection above.
